Pass and Susel Academy of Educational Excellence
Carolyn Pass, Class of '66 and Richard Susel, Class of '66
Dr. Pass is a dermatologist based in the Baltimore area. She serves as an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and was previously a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine from 1977 to 2001.
Dr. Pass conducts research in the field of dermatology and has contributed to articles, scientific papers, and chapters in books in the field. She served on the Board of Directors for the MAA in 2007, received the Gold Medal Award – Class II from the American Academy of Dermatology, and, along with her husband, Dr. Susel, received the Distinguished Service Award from the MAA in 2011.
Dr. Susel is a practicing ophthalmologist and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Susel also serves as a Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and at the Johns Hopkins Medical Center Wilmer Eye Institute, as well as an ophthalmology consultant at the Baltimore Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Drs. Pass and Susel established the University of Maryland School of Medicine Academy of Education Excellence, which is designed to recognize faculty members and other educators who demonstrate excellence in bedside, classroom, and/or innovative medical education. Most recently, they increased their support for the Medical Academy of Excellence by creating the Carolyn J. Pass, MD '66 and Richard M. Susel, MD '66 Leadership Training and Innovation Endowment.
Drs. Pass and Susel's most recent endowment gift was the first alumni leadership gift for the new Renaissance Curriculum.
