At the University of Maryland School of Medicine, we are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected, celebrating our unique identities including all dimensions of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Our OUTlist is a safe space for our current SOM faculty, staff, students, trainees, and alumni who identify as LGBTQ+ to connect with others who share this lived experience within the School of Medicine. It is intended to facilitate communication and community building, and is a reflection of our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Being part of the OUTlist offers a variety of benefits:
These names represent just a small sub-portion of the LGBTQ+ community but serve as a reminder that LGBTQ+ community deserves to thrive in open and safe environments.
We also recognize that an OUTlist has the potential to attract controversy around privacy concerns, misuse of information, and discrimination, however the University of Maryland School of Medicine community chooses to uphold its core values of Equity and Justice to support and build a strong LGBTQ+ community.
We, at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, aspire for this OUTlist to:
Increase Visibility: Help create a more visible LGBTQ+ presence within the School of Medicine, fostering a more inclusive environment for everyone.
Build Community: Connect with peers, mentors, and allies to build a strong support network.
Foster Mentorship: Link with LGBTQ+ faculty and staff who can offer guidance and support as you navigate your academic or professional journey.
Promote Networking Opportunities: Expand your network and connect with LGBTQ+ colleagues across the School of Medicine community.
Alternative Ways to Get Involved
If you choose not to join the OUTlist, there are other alternative ways to connect with our LGBTQ+ community.
- Attend LGBTQ+ events and workshops as shared within the community.

UMB students, staff, and faculty can enroll in a free online Safe Space course and earn a digital badge and micro-credential. Safe Space Online brings UMB’s traditional LGBTQ+ Safe Space program to the virtual world, allowing participants to build their LGBTQ+ allyship skills, engage with a cohort of online peers, and learn about LGBTQ+ identities
