University of Maryland Hospital and Clinics

The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) is a tertiary health care system serving the healthcare needs of Maryland as well as parts of Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia. The University of Maryland Medical Center is an 800-bed teaching hospital that is the flagship of the System located in downtown Baltimore. UMMC is a national and regional referral center for trauma, cancer care, neurocare, cardiac care, diabetes and endocrinology, women's and children's health and has one of the largest solid organ transplant programs in the country. All physicians on staff are faculty physicians of the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dermatology was first recognized as a specialty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1879 and became its own department in 1992. Today, the Department of Dermatology treats more than 13,000 patients annually both within the hospital and on an outpatient basis; collects and analyzes approximately 10,000 pathological specimens; and performs more than 10,000 minor surgeries each year and about 500 specialized Mohs micrographic surgeries.

Residents see adult and pediatric patients at our downtown clinic as well as satellite clinics in Columbia and Millersville, Maryland. The patient population is extremely diverse and residents have the unique opportunity to see skin pathology in many different skin types. One resident serves as the in-hospital consultant. Continuity clinic meets half a day a week for all residents. Each resident will be assigned his/her own patients during this time, and will average at around 12 patients individually per clinic. The fact that they attend this clinic weekly and have primary responsibility for the patients over the course of their three years is unique in American dermatological training programs.

Baltimore Veterans Administration Hospital

The Baltimore VA Medical Center is a division of the VA Maryland Health Care System. The medical center is the acute medical and surgical care facility for the VA Maryland Health Care System and offers a full range of inpatient, outpatient and primary care services. It includes a dedicated dermatology clinic with its own support staff.

Rotations at the VA include twice weekly procedure clinic where residents will gain ample experience doing excisions, electrodessication & curettage, cosmetic and therapeutic injections, and laser. Mohs surgery is scheduled two to three times per month. The dermatology clinic also runs a busy phototherapy unit that treats a wide range of cutaneous pathology.
