Education
The DasSarma laboratory is located in the spectacular Inner Harbor of Baltimore, Maryland, at the Columbus Center.
Graduate Education
Students interested in graduate research may enter the DasSarma laboratory through one of two University of Maryland programs, Graduate Program in Marine, Estuarine, and Environmental Sciences (MEES) or Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS). He has been active in graduate education for many years, having founded the GPILS PhD track in Genomic Biology (originally called Molecular Genetics, Genomics, and Bioinformatics). Prof. DasSarma has mentored many PhD and MS students who have gone on to successful research careers in both industry and academics.
Please direct questions by email to Prof. S. DasSarma.
Undergraduate and Informal Education
The DasSarma lab is committed to both undergraduate education and informal education. Undergraduate students from many area colleges participate in our laboratory research, including students from the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Towson University, Stevenson University, Goucher College, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Baltimore City Community College, etc. Students who are interested in carrying out internships, independent study, or undergraduate research are encouraged to contact us.
We are also disseminating our research by incorporating it into inquiry-based classroom and informal education at different levels. It has been incorporated into college and high-school textbooks and is even on display at museums for public education. We have also developed a number of teaching kits employing Halobacterium sp. NRC-1 (the “New Model Microbe”), which are available through Carolina Biological Supply Co.
Additional information on our educational programs is available on the HaloEd website, and by emailing Priya DasSarma at pdassarma@som.umaryland.edu.
