Seeking healthy adults aged 18-49 for an investigational vaccine study for E coli, the most common cause of Traveler’s Diarrhea. Study duration will be approximately 9 months. Volunteers will complete 10 outpatient visits and have a 9-day inpatient stay. During the inpatient stay, volunteers will be “challenged” with live E. coli. Compensation may be up to $4,625 for qualified volunteers.
The injectable vaccine for this study was shown in a previous study to be safe and well-tolerated. This study investigates how well the vaccine prevents Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) infection. ETEC is a bacteria that can cause a serious diarrheal infection and is especially harmful to children in developing countries. Globally, there are approximately 220 million diarrheal cases resulting in more than 40,0000 deaths each year. While ETEC can be treated with antibiotics and IV fluids, the long-term effects of ETEC-related diarrhea continues to impact the health of children in developing countries. There are currently no licensed vaccines against ETEC.
