UM SOM Scientists Learn About Typhoid Burden and Surveillance in Africa

A team of experts from the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Developmentvisited Burkina Faso and Madagascar to learn more about their typhoid surveillance and the burden of typhoid in their countries. The surveillance is currently conducted in collaboration with the International Vaccine Institute (IVI).

The CVD team, led by CVD Director Kathleen Neuzil, MD, MPH, met with government officials, local healthcare workers, and surveillance teams. Dr. Neuzil is a globally recognized vaccinologist specializing in international field trials and vaccine policy. She has led successful multi-year, multi-site, efforts in global health, informing vaccine policy recommendations and catalyzing vaccine introduction.

The Typhoid Vaccine Acceleration Consortium (TyVAC), a partnership between the CVD, the Oxford Vaccine Group at the University of Oxford, and PATH, an international non-profit, aims to accelerate the introduction of new typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs) as part of an integrated approach to reduce the burden of typhoid. TyVAC is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
