The National Center for School Mental Health (NCSMH) offers a postdoctoral fellowship in child and adolescent mental health. This position involves opportunities to advance skills in research, training, policy, and practice related to child and adolescent mental health services, all with an emphasis on school-based services.

Fellows work with leaders and faculty in the areas of school mental health, which may include specialized training in evidence-based practice implementation, prevention and intervention programming in schools, mental health workforce development initiatives for school staff and school mental health clinicians, Systems of Care, and family engagement.

In addition to collaborating on school mental health research and training activities, the fellowship may include the opportunity for clinical practice in schools, depending on candidates’ interests and experience.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry offers a postdoctoral fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient and Pediatric Consultation-Liaison.

Fellows in this position will have the opportunity to complete rotations in inpatient consultation/liaison and on the inpatient child and adolescent behavioral health unit. The fellow will be working with medical providers, multidisciplinary teams (e.g., psychiatrists, nursing, social workers, occupational therapists, etc.), and families to advance skills in training, policy, and practice related to child and adolescent mental health services. The emphasis of this fellowship is in acute-care clinical service provision along with consultation, collaboration, and coordination with systems in which youth develop and interact (e.g., schools). Inpatient consultation/liaison focuses on brief behavioral and emotional support during pediatric medical hospitalizations.

Reasons for referral may consist of comorbid psychiatric concerns presenting during hospitalization (e.g., depression or anxiety, disruptive behavior), coping with new medical diagnosis/injury, nonadherence to medical regimen, or somatic symptoms without clear medical/physiological etiology. The majority of the fellow’s time will be spent working on the inpatient child and adolescent behavioral health unit. The child and adolescent inpatient behavioral health unit provides multidisciplinary services and supports, as well as consultation and programming related to transition back into the community. As such, the clinical emphasis is on diagnosis, assessment, and stabilization of the child and family, determination of initial needs for treatment and needs for longer term follow-up.

The fellow’s role consists of providing consultation to the treatment team, leading therapeutic groups, and providing brief individual therapy. Therapeutic modalities include family systems and cognitive behavioral approaches. The fellow will have opportunities to enhance skills related to trauma-informed care, family therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical-behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, and behavior modification.
