New Faculty Orientation will be held on Friday, November 22, and I hope to meet all new faculty members there.
I remember when I was a new faculty member at Yale back in the 1980s, my department chair presented me with a package and I thought it sounded pretty good, so I accepted it as-is. Times have changed. If I knew then what I know now, I would have certainly negotiated a little bit harder. As it turns out, with some focus and some hard work, I quickly generated measurable results that allowed me to return to my Chair to successfully negotiate for additional support.
CARTI is here to help you navigate these early stages of your research career. We offer intensive grant writing courses for K awards and R awards to help you secure federal funding for your research program. I also had the pleasure of teaching a negotiation class this year; to help you improve your negotiation skills so you don’t do as I did, and a recording of that course can be viewed here. For those interested in complete training experience in setting up a research program that culminates with a draft R01 ready for submission, keep an eye out for our next CARTI Research Training Track call for applications in mid-2025.
For those new faculty members joining UMSOM with active research programs underway, CARTI also offers seminars and programs geared at mid-career faculty members
I hope you find the UMSOM to be a vibrant and supportive environment and welcome you to tap in to all that we offer at CARTI.
See you on Nov. 22!
Sincerely,
-- E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA
