Visit of Gallaudet University Faculty and Students to UMB, July 14, 2021
In July, Professor Adebowale Ogunjirin, PhD and a student from Gallaudet University visited the University of Maryland School of Medicine laboratory of Professor Richard Thompson, PhD in the Deptartment of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to initiate a collaboration on application of advanced fluorescence techniques in research and for educational purposes. Students and many faculty from Gallaudet are hearing impaired, and instruction must be conducted in American Sign Language. They were accompanied by students from James Madison University (and their mentors) from the JMU Program in ASL training, for whom this was also a valuable training opportunity in translating scientific/technical conversations between hearing and deaf scientists. The visit included a lecture and demonstration of a training exercise in fluorescence polarization techniques for drug discovery for the students.
