Anesthesiology Overview


Kenichi Tanaka, MD, Professor, Director of Cardiac Anesthesiology, has been invited to join the Editorial Board of the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia (JCVA).          Wendy K. Bernstein, MD, MBA, Seema P. Deshpande, MBBS, and Patrick N. Our research division's faculty conducts research in clinical anesthesiology, acute lung injury, neurodegeneration and neuroprotection, human factors, telemedicine, and basic respiratory physiology.

We also collaborate with researchers at UMMC, the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

News & Announcements

Congratulations to Paul Bigeleisen, MD, lead editor of the second edition of Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, intended for residents and attendings. The second edition includes 33 new chapters on pain therapy as well as the original 40 chapters dedicated to ultrasound guided nerve block. The text was supported with grants from the Fulbright Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and the National Anesthesiology Society of the Netherlands.

On Thursday, April 23, 2015, The Department of Anesthesiology hosted 2015 Bring Your Child To Work Day. An invitation was extended to the children of our department’s faculty, residents, CRNA and administrative staff. Twenty four students, ranging in age from 10 to 17 years old, registered and participated. Click here to see photos. 

Congratulations to two of our Department of Anesthesiology faculty, who have been selected to perform special honors at the May 14, 2015 University of Maryland School of Medicine Convocation. Dr. Mary Njoku will serve as the Honorary Mace Bearer and Dr. Caron Hong will serve as the Honorary Hooder. Both, were selected by the graduating class of 2015.

Congratulations Dr. Arthur Formanek and faculty advisor, Dr. Mary Njoku for receiving the honor of third place for their complex case poster presentation "A Case of Hepatopulmonary Syndrome: When is Preoperative Hypoxemia OK?" at the Mid-Atlantic Anesthesia Research Conference (MAARC), April 2015.

The scientific discoveries of Alan Faden, MD, David Loane, PhD and Junfang Wu, BM, PhD are featured in the Spring 2015 edition of the University of Maryland Medicine Bulletin. Marta M. Lipinski, Ph.D. awarded a 5-year, $1,678,905 R01 grant.
