Adult Multispecialty Anesthesiology

In the Division of Adult Multispecialty Anesthesiology, the largest of the Department’s Divisions, staff members care for patients in the Weinberg and North Hospital operative suites of the University of Maryland Medical Center. An expanding group of faculty care for patients and educate fellows, residents, medical students, student nurse anesthetists, and paramedics in 27 surgical and two endoscopy suites. Division members not only provide care in surgical suites, but also anesthetic care in non-surgical cases, such as the MRI/CT scanning areas, neuroangiography, body angiography, radiation oncology, pulmonary medicine, electrophysiology, and gastrointestinal endoscopy. The Division expects continued growth for its services in these areas. The Anesthesia Information Management System (AIMS), an electronic system for recording dynamic patient data during surgery, further supports all services.

In addition, the Division successfully implemented the preoperative phase of the AIMS system in 2015. Electronic assessments of both outpatients and inpatients enable staff members to document a patient’s preanesthetic information accurately and concisely.  To maximize the efficient use of regional anesthesia in the perioperative period and enhance the education of trainees in regional anesthetic techniques, the Division also established a perioperative regional anesthesia team.
