2014 Holiday Giving Program
This holiday season, the Department of Anesthesiology supported programs of St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore, an independent non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure those impacted by poverty have the skills and resources to achieve their full potential.
The department raised $7470 to support the Head Start Program and Sarah’s Hope at Hannah More.
Head Start is a preschool education program for 3- 4 year old children. The program prepares low-income children for academic success and promotes age-appropriate social skills. With the department donations, we purchased educational gifts for 40 children to take home this holiday season, and provided much needed educational supplies for the preschool classrooms. Department staff volunteered at the preschool, spending time with the preschoolers making a fun reindeer craft, and providing a healthy snack for the children.
Sarah’s Hope at Hannah More is an emergency shelter for women and children. We fulfilled the wish list of a homeless family, helping them with their transition into an apartment. We purchased much needed clothing for each family member, personal care items and household items such as dishes, a vacuum cleaner and even a Christmas tree! Department staff personally delivered the gifts to the family’s new home. We also purchased a supply of hats, mittens and diapers for the emergency shelter.
In addition, a monetary donation was made to the Head Start program, which will fund an educational field trip for the preschool children this spring.
