Welcome to the Clinical Research Division of the Department of Anesthesiology, where research and compassionate patient care intersect. Our division is dedicated to advancing the science of anesthesiology, improving patient outcomes, and enhancing the safety and efficacy of anesthesia practices. We work across multiple disciplines and subspecialties and collaborate on projects to generate new avenues of research and make meaningful strides in the field of anesthesiology through innovation, education, and a commitment to discovery.

Dr. Brittney Williams is an Associate Professor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Currently, she serves as Director of Clinical Research for the Department of Anesthesiology. Her clinical expertise focuses on perioperative coagulopathy, while her research explores the molecular mechanisms driving coagulation and immune responses in systemic inflammatory conditions, such as sepsis, trauma, and cardiac surgery. Dr. Williams’ lab integrates translational research approaches, including RNA and extracellular vesicle analysis, to uncover novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. She also strongly focuses on mentoring students and residents, fostering translational and clinical research expertise.

Clinical Research Manager: LaToya Stubbs is a dedicated research professional with over 20 years of experience in research administration. LaToya has worked in various research administrative roles at the University of Maryland for 20 years. Her passion for research drives her commitment to make the Department of Anesthesiology's research program known for being a department on the cutting edge of clinical research.

Clinical Research Assistants:

Arijit Dutta is from New Jersey. He recently completed his MS in Bioengineering from the University of Maryland-College Park after obtaining his BS in Bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Arijit likes playing soccer, fishing, and baking in his free time. 

Denion Prifti recently graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Cellular Biology. He is originally from Queens, New York, and is a big Knicks fan. He is taking a gap year to apply for medical school, and in his free time, he likes to play chess and basketball.

 


Anesthesia Clinical Research Committee

Clinical research projects within the Department of Anesthesiology benefit from the guidance and oversight of our Advisory Committee for Clinical Research Projects. This committee, made up of experienced preclinical, translational, and clinical researchers and data scientist, is available to provide valuable insights, mentorship, and strategic direction throughout the course of your project. They are dedicated to ensuring that your research is not only methodologically sound but also aligned with the highest standards of ethical practice and clinical relevance.
