Office of Medical Education
The mission of the Office of Medical Education (OME) is to support the educational program of the School of Medicine across the continuum through curricular oversight, education innovation, technological expertise, assessment and evaluation management, and research.
OME is directed by the Associate Dean for Medical Education and Student Experience and works closely with the Office of Student Affairs to manage and enrich the student experience at UMSOM.
The functions of OME include, but are not limited to:
- development and management of education support infrastructure including curricular websites, databases, information technology initiatives, and curricular support for faculty, students and staff
- computer software support for the medical students
- establishing the medical education program academic calendar
- consultation, implementation, and evaluation of novel teaching techniques
- academic support for all medical students and consultation with other students within the School of Medicine
- support of the committees devoted to medical student education (Medical Education Advisory Committee, Curriculum Coordinating Committee, etc.)
- the administrative locus for Practice of Medicine, a four-year course spanning multiple disciplines and departments
- oversight of the evaluation, examination, and grading of medical students, including implementation of the technologies involved
- the locus of quality improvement activities for the medical education program including the Medical Education Continuous Quality Improvement (MECQI) committee
- monitoring of LCME accreditation requirements
- representation to the AAMC Group for Educational Affairs of the AAMC
- in conjunction with the Office of Student Affairs, administration of Introduction to Medical School
- in conjunction with the Office of Student Affairs, monitoring of the student experience including the establishment and maintenance of an environment conducive for learning, built upon a foundation of mutual respect between learner and educator
- in partnership with the School of Nursing, shared management of the Standardized Patient program
- in partnership with the Center for Interprofessional Education (IPE), coordination of IPE activities
In addition, the Office of Medical Education provides consultation to other education programs within the School of Medicine and other component schools of the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
