Dr. Campbell is a pediatric infectious disease specialist conducting important vaccine research.
James Campbell, MD, MS, Professor of Pediatrics and a pediatric infectious disease specialist at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, was included among Baltimore Magazine’s 2019 “Top Docs” list.
Dr. Campbell is in charge of several clinical research studies being conducted in the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD), involving the testing of pediatric vaccines.
He is an expert on vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles.
Dr. Campbell, who has been on faculty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine since 2001, previously worked in . in Uganda for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mainly in the field of HIV prevention and care. Since 2012, he has been Vice Chair of the Institutional Review Board and Associate Director of the University of Maryland Baltimore Clinical Research Training and Mentoring Program. He is a member of the Committee on Infectious Diseases (COID or “Red Book Committee”) for the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Each year, Baltimore Magazine conducts a survey roughly 14,000 physicians in the Baltimore region who were asked to name the best doctors in 129 subspecialties. Nearly 20,000 names were submitted, and only those who received the highest number of recommendations by their peers made the list, according to the magazine.

Mpox Vaccine Trial for Adolescents, Children Begins at UM School of Medicine
A 2022 outbreak of mpox (formerly monkeypox) sickened more than 30,000 people and caused 38 deaths in the United States. It highlighted the lack of an approved vaccine for those under 18 years old. To address this pressing need, faculty-scientists at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) recently launched a phase 2 safety trial to test a vaccine in adolescents ages 12 to 17.

New Genomic Research Shows Why Testing Malaria Vaccines in the Clinic is as Rigorous as Natural Exposure in the Field
Malaria is the deadliest mosquito-borne parasitic infection of humans. In 2021, after a century of research, the World Health Organization (WHO) approved the world’s first malaria vaccine. That vaccine reduces the incidence of malaria infections in young children aged 5-17 months by only 30 percent, meaning that it remains critical to continue developing and testing more effective vaccines.
