Biosketch

Dr. Salenger specializes in minimally invasive approaches to aortic and mitral valve repair surgery. He has been a part of University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center's cardiac surgery program since 2013, during which time he has contributed to excellent patient outcomes and the program's distinguished three-star rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He is a national expert on Enhanced Recovery After Cardiac Surgery (ERAS) protocols, which he and his team have implemented at UM St. Joseph.

As chief of cardiac surgery at UM St. Joseph, Dr. Salenger oversees the cardiac surgery team, providing a vision for the future growth of the hospital's Heart Institute, an enduring Center of Excellence for the University of Maryland Medical System. He is also an associate professor of surgery at University of Maryland School of Medicine. He has published and lectured widely on the topics of arterial bypass grafting, blood conservation and enhanced recovery. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Salenger is an executive board member of the national ERAS Cardiac Society and co-chair of the Maryland Healthcare Commission Cardiac Services Advisory Committee. He is a past chair of the Maryland Cardiac Surgery Quality Initiative.

Dr. Salenger graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Union College/Albany Medical College's seven-year medical program in 1995. He completed his cardiothoracic surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts and then a mitral valve fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
