Biosketch
May Hsieh Blanchard MD, FACOG is Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Dr. Blanchard received her Medical Doctorate from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and completed her training at the Case-MetroHealth/Cleveland Clinic Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program. She was recruited to the University of Maryland to serve as Division Chief of General OBGyn in 2007, developing the Division into a multi-faceted powerhouse of Academic Specialists practicing the full scope of the specialty of OBGyn. Dr. Blanchard also served as UM OBGyn Residency Program Director for nearly 18 years, growing the program from 24 to 32 residents. She is currently Vice Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, and Chief of Gynecology and Obstetrics in the Department of Surgery at University of Maryland Medical Center – Midtown Campus. She served as the chair of the University of Maryland Medical System’s Obstetric Patient Safety Committee for twelve years, and sits on the State of Maryland Morbidity, Mortality, and Quality Review Committee. Dr. Blanchard is active in the arenas of teaching, research, clinical practice, and service. Her areas of research and clinical interest involve the evaluation and care of patients with fibroids, medical education, and family planning.
Dr. Blanchard has contributed with longevity at the department, institution, state, national, and international levels. Mentorship, Education, and Advocacy have been hallmarks of her 30-year career, serving in leadership roles on the Council of Residency Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) Education Committee, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG), and the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) OBGyn Residency and Fellowship Review Committee. She has served on the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Board of Directors, elected to three separate terms (JFCAC Chair, Early-Career Fellow at Large, District IV Chair). She was elected as Chair of the Council of District Chairs in 2023-2024, thereby functioning as a member of the Board of Directors Executive Committee. Most recently, Dr. Blanchard was elected to the position of ACOG President Elect. She will be inaugurated as ACOG’s 78th President in May 2027.
