Becoming a Physician at UM SOM - An Overarching Strategic Issue
There are two solutions to these issues that lead to very different strategic approaches. One is to design specific courses/experiences in the HELPERS-PRO areas: the pro to this approach is that this provides a focus and concentration on issues, but from experience to date, the con is that attendance will be low. The second strategy is to spread HELPERS-PRO throughout; the pro to this approach being that more students and faculty are exposed; the con, that it results in dilution and inconsistency. I recommend doing both to achieve maximum effects. However, this does not solve the frequently stated problem of the lack of reinforcement of issues during the clinical rotations that have been initially presented earlier, e.g. communicating clearly with patients, basing decisions of evidence, wrestling with ethical dilemmas and taking into consideration socio-economic/life-style issues.
