Division of Neonatology
The Division of Neonatology provides advanced tertiary care for the smallest and sickest newborns. The state-of-the-art, 40-bed NICU is one of the largest in the state. Therapies provided include state-of-the-art modalities for extremely premature and premature babies, individualized nutritional management, surgical interventions for birth defects including congenital heart disease, abdominal wall defects, cleft lip/palate repair, brain malformations, whole body cooling for neonatal encephalopathy, care of infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and care of infants with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. The division also supports families with programs from the March of Dimes, social work, and group support. The division collaborates with its counterpart at Johns Hopkins Hospital in providing transport of critically ill neonates from community hospitals to a tertiary care center for intensive care. Planning is underway for the opening of a new 52 single room NICU in 2012 where a parent may room-in with their infant.
