Division of Behavioral & Developmental Pediatrics

A Developmental Pediatrician is board certified in General Pediatrics and Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. Developmental Pediatricians have additional training and expertise in identifying and managing disorders of development, learning and behavior. Developmental Pediatric services are provided in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland by Dr. Trevor Valentine. He is assisted by Rachel Murray, a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. We provide diagnostic consultations, developmental assessments, developmental surveillance, educational advocacy, medication management, patient education and appropriate referrals for children with disorders of learning, development and behavior. Some of these include known or suspected Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disability, Learning Disabilities, Motor Disorders, Brain Injury, Chromosomal Disorders, Birth Defects, Disorders of Communication, Lead Poisoning, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and NICU graduates. Developmental pediatricians also do pre and post adoption counseling. A consultation with a Developmental Pediatrician typically begins with a review of all available medical, family and school data as well as any evaluations that may have been done in the past. Your child will then have a complete medical and neurological examination, behavioral and psychosocial assessments and developmental testing as indicated. Diagnostic information and therapeutic recommendations are then shared with you and your child's primary care provider, teachers and therapists. Recommendations may also be made for follow-up medication management visits, appropriate referrals for further testing or for your child to be seen by a speech and language pathologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist or psychologist. From time to time, it may also become necessary for us to refer families to an educational advocate.

We communicate regularly with the family, referring physician and school system to insure best outcomes for children referred to our practice. In addition to clinical efforts, we train the University of Maryland Pediatric residents in our Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics.
