Faculty Mentoring for a Non-UM or Foreign Medical Student

The University of Maryland (UM) School of Medicine encourages and will assist faculty who desire to foster the research activities of all medical students, whether from UM, other U.S. medical schools or from recognized foreign medical schools. In order to maintain records of such student activities and standardize procedures regarding student research in this regard, the following policy will be in effect for non-UM students.

Non-UM medical students who contact faculty must provide the following documents to the Office of Student Research (OSR):

  • A dean’s letter indicating current enrollment status (dean or designate official)
  • A transcript
  • The timing and duration of the research activity
  • UM research mentor
  • Means of support (especially lodging and subsistence for foreign students)

and in the case of foreign medical students:

  • A written agreement by the host faculty and student that the foreign medical student will not have any patient contact

All students are required to submit an abstract of their research when complete and any publications that results from that research.

If a visa is required, an IAP66 form should be completed three to six months prior to the visit and the visa will be requested from the registrar by the OSR on behalf of the dean.

Upon arrival (first week), the student should report to the OSR which will be responsible for providing a student ID application and obtaining an e-mail address if requested by the student. Foreign students on visa are also required to report to the university registrar upon arrival.
