Office of Student Research (OSR)
Would you consider providing a high school, undergraduate or medical student with a mentored research experience? The Office of Student Research receives numerous inquiries from students seeking paid and volunteer opportunities during the academic year and summer. Students often express a specific interest and we attempt to match through three on-line databases:
More often than not, the entries in these databases are out of date. In any case, the willingness of a faculty member to have a summer trainee is not apparent.
If you would consider having a student in your research environment (basic, translational or clinical), the Office of Student Research would like to hear from you, know what your current research projects might be, the kind of student you would accept, and we would like to maintain an up-to-date listing of potential mentors (not for publication). If you are actively looking for a summer employee in the either of the student categories, we can also help you advertise this to the medical students.
While direct contact between the faculty mentor and student should occur frequently, day-to-day supervision is often shared with a willing senior graduate student, postdoctoral fellow or senior technician. A set of Trainee-Mentor Guidelines is also available here.
Please take a moment to complete the Research Mentor Application Form and return it to Toni Harris (asharris@som.umaryland.edu).
