I went to Mt. St. Joseph’s High School in Baltimore and graduated in 1998. I went on to Emory University in Atlanta, GA and graduated from there in 2002 with degrees in Mathematics and Chemistry, along with a minor in Physics. That fall I started doing research with Dr. Jarrell on educational cognitive models. I entered medical school here at UM last fall (2003), where I continue my research with Dr. Jarrell (Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs), Dr. Jade Wong (Diagnostic Radiology), and Dr. Amy Sisley (Shock Trauma). One project that I am working on involves the development of learning models for application of the FAST ultrasound exam in different fields (Radiology and Shock Trauma). For this I had to learn the application of ultrasound techniques. We have designed (but not implemented) a simulation for reinforcing the current teaching of the FAST exam, addressing common learning deficits and mistakes while providing long-term retention of the information.
Our primary interest is in learning models, specifically determining the weak points of current teaching methods (or current learning) and how computers can supplement these methods. The program was excellent, and allowed me to broaden my research understanding beyond my specific research interests. It was great to be surrounded by many people with the same broad goals but focused on different projects. The lunches provided at the seminars were fantastic.
