Prerequisite:
Internal Medicine Clerkship
Location:
University of Maryland Hospital
5th Floor, Ward 5A/B/C
Description and Goals:
Seniors doing student internships with the Pediatric Department are assigned to the pediatric ward. This ward team cares for all of the general pediatric patients. One sub-intern will be assigned to the general team and one will assigned to the specialty team, which takes care of primarily Hematology/Oncology, Renal and Pulmonary patients. Each student intern is an integral part of the ward staff, composed of the resident, one intern and several junior students, and are assigned their own group of patients to work-up, follow and treat under direct supervision of the ward resident and attending physician. He/She actively participates in ward rounds and conferences. Night call is every fourth night. Overall, the rotation gives the student a chance to have primary responsibility for the care of the children he/she admits and serves as excellent preparation for an internship in pediatrics or other specialties. In addition, special emphasis is placed on honing the student's communication and professionalism skills, including direct observation of a History and Physical Examination by the teaching attending. Students are expected to be present at 8:00 a.m. on the first day of the rotation. Days off for interviewing must be cleared with the Inpatient Director well in advance. During the rotation, Dr. Gladstein, Sub-I Director meets will all Sub-Is every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in his office. During the rotation, Dr. Lewin, Sub-I Director, meets with all Sub-Is every Thursday at 3:30 in her office for case conference.
