Infectious Diseases at UMMC - INFE 548

Prerequisite:

Successful completion of Core Internal Medicine clerkship and be in the 4th quarter of third year.

DESCRIPTION AND GOALS:

This medicine sub-internship is designed to prepare students to assume direct responsibility for the care of hospitalized medical patients on the Infectious Diseases service at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Students will care for patients who may have HIV or other infectious diseases requiring specialty care from an Infectious Diseases attending. Students take histories, perform physical examinations, carry out and interpret diagnostic tests, formulate and institute treatment plans, perform procedures under supervision, and conduct day-to-day follow-up of all patients admitted to them. Student interns work as an integral member of the ward team. The patient care team is comprised of two or three students and two first-year residents supervised by a senior resident and a full time teaching attending.

Goals:

  1. Perform primary management in the care of the hospitalized patient.
  2. Understand the management of patients with infectious diseases.
  3. Learn the art of sign-out and safe hand-offs.
  4. Perform procedures directly applicable to the care of the hospitalized patient.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Teaching conferences include Attending Rounds seven days per week, Morning Report (Mondays-Fridays), and Medical Grand Rounds on Wednesdays at noon. Senior medicine leaders in the Department of Medicine at University of Maryland Medical Center and the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center hold a special clinical conference weekly for the student interns on Thursdays at 2:30pm. Sub-interns are also welcome to attend all noon resident conferences during the week.
