Prerequisites:
Completion of Internal Medicine and General Surgery Clerkships and successful matriculation into the 4th year of medical school

R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the University of Maryland Hospital
Description and Goals:
The senior student will serve as an acting intern on the Acute Care Emergency Surgery Service of the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the University of Maryland Hospital. These Services treat a large volume of surgical emergencies and critical surgical illnesses. The student will be exposed to the diagnosis and treatment of the acute surgical disease, the acute abdomen, skin and soft tissue infections, acute biliary disease, and elective general surgery. Course content includes gastrointestinal diseases. biliary tract disease, surgical oncology, and surgical endocrinology, Emphasis is placed on continuity of care, including following each patient through preoperative evaluation, surgery, post-op care and clinic follow-up. The senior student will be an integral member of the surgical team consisting of third year medical students, surgical house staff, nurse practitioners, clinical fellows and faculty.
