R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center
Description and Goals:
In this clinical elective you will be a member of a trauma team at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. The Center is the clinical hub of the State of Maryland’s system of emergency care, the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems. Each year, approximately 6,000 injured patients are admitted to the Center. Approximately 80% are admitted directly from the scene of injury via State Police Medevac Helicopter or Ambulance and approximately 15% are transferred to the Center from other hospitals. The Center is staffed and equipped to deliver state-of-the-art care to the critically injured. In addition, patients with conditions requiring hyperbaric medicine are treated. Care at the center is multi-disciplinary. The trauma teams are responsible for the resuscitation, diagnosis, and emergency trauma surgery management of all patients from admission to discharge. In addition, they are responsible for coordination of care with other specialties, including orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, oral surgery, anesthesiology and critical care medicine. The student is expected to gain a basic knowledge of the priorities of trauma resuscitation, diagnosis, acute care and an understanding of post-acute care. Student activities are closely supervised by their team attending surgeons and fellows.
In addition to clinical activities, educational activities include weekly M&M conferences and Grand Rounds Lectures.
Students are assigned to 1 of 3 trauma teams and are expected to follow the same time-table as the fellows and residents on these teams. This means that one out of every 3 days the student is expected to stay in the hospital all night.
