Pediatric Critical Care - PICU 548

Description and Goals:

This sub-internship is designed to give senior medical students the opportunity to evaluate and manage critically ill children under the direct supervision of senior residents, Pediatric Critical Care Fellows, and Pediatric Critical Care Faculty. The student will follow patients from admission to discharge from the PICU, and will be expected to present the patient(s) daily on work rounds. The subintern will be encouraged to develop a diagnostic and management plan on his/her patient(s) under the supervision of the third year resident. Students will be encouraged to focus on the basic pathophysiology of disease states in the critically ill child. Daily attendance at didactic conference is required. Students must arrive no later than 7:00 a.m. on the first day. Work rounds begin at 7:30 a.m. and the subintern is expected to pre-round on his/her patients beforehand. Also, the subintern is expected to take call every fourth night along with the third year resident. During the rotation, Dr. Lewin, Sub-I Director, meets with all Sub-Is every Thursday at 3:30 in her office for case conference.

Additional Comments:

Because students are incorporated into the call schedule well in advance of the rotation, those who wish to drop this sub-internship can drop the course with the preceptor's permission at a minimum of ONE MONTH prior to the scheduled rotation.
