Description and Goals:
This elective enables students to learn how child abuse and neglect are approached from both medical and interdisciplinary perspectives. A rich array of opportunities includes:
- participating in the assessment of referred patients;
- participating in team meetings;
- visiting nearby community agencies where children suspected of having been abused are assessed;
- visiting with public agencies (police, child protective services, states attorney);
- individual discussions with our interdisciplinary faculty;
- supervised reading;
- access to self-learning materials;
- participation in research meetings.
Beyond the important issue of child abuse and neglect, the student will be introduced to broader concerns regarding children's psychosocial environment and advocacy.
