Clinical Applications of Anatomy - GSUR 540

Prerequisites:

Internal Medicine and Surgery Clerkships

Location:

University of Maryland - MASTRI Simulation Center, Swirnow Conference Room and Anatomy Lab

Description and Goals:

  • To further emphasize an understanding of structural relationships in the body.
  • To familiarize the student with the basic anatomical structures through cadaveric dissection and to begin to master concepts.
  • To conceptualize principles and practices relevant at the intern level.
  • To learn procedural skills appropriate for the surgical intern level.
  • To expose the students to standard operating room practice, procedures, and equipment.
  • To educate the student about the relationship between surgical practices and patient care, as well as developing practices that are patient-driven.

**Specific Skills Addressed: Chest tubes, central lines, peripheral access, airway management, drains, and basic radiology interpretation. **

**Due to cadaver resources, students are not able to drop the course 2 months prior to the start of the course without finding a replacement student to fill the spot.
