Description and Goals:
The student will attend and participate in all activities of the GI Division and serve as a member of the inpatient consult team at UMMS and/or BVAMC. He/she will work closely with the fellows in evaluating consults on inpatients and in the clinic setting. The student will have the opportunity to observe all GI procedures including upper endoscopy, colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy, ERCP, EUS, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, liver biopsy and esophageal manometry/pH studies. The student will learn how endoscopic, radiographic and tissue biopsy methods are used in diagnosing and managing GI disorders. Conferences include weekly GI Grand Rounds, patient management, pathology and radiology. Opportunities to rotate on the Hepatology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease inpatient services are also available. For students with more specific interests, a wide range of expertise is available among the GI faculty, and research opportunities are available.
