Two Month Research Elective - RSCH 540
Prerequisites:
None
Location:
University of Maryland
Description and Goals:
The Research Elective provides supervised full-time research experiences for medical students with a funded investigator at the School of Medicine. The purpose of the program is: 1) to encourage students to blend a career in basic-translational-clinical research with academic medicine; and 2) to provide students with a realistic understanding of the medical research environment. Any member of the School of Medicine who is at least at the level of Assistant Professor and who has suitable research support may be a research mentor for a medical student. Students should consult with the Office of Student Research prior to and during the choice of a mentor. A listing of many faculty members and their research at the School of Medicine is available on-line at the Faculty and Staff Resources Web Site, at the LifeSciences website, and via the departmental websites which can be found on the OSR Website. Students will be advised of the appropriateness of one or more possible mentors. Participation in the elective includes a required research paper that summarizes the research. All students must provide evidence of current HIPAA, IACUC and/or Human Research certification. Students conducting clinical research must gain approval from the IRB prior to starting work on the project. Mentors will be encouraged to appropriately support inclusion of students on manuscripts and abstracts and the presentation of high quality student papers at national scientific meetings and to acknowledge the source of student support in all publications. In addition to the scientific report, all trainees are required to submit a narrative critique of their activities to receive credit. The final grade will be determined by the faculty mentor.

Travel Awards:
Travel awards to scientific meetings may be available to qualified students who are first author on an abstract by separate application, available through the Office of Student Research (OSR) or external agencies (see OSR website). It is expected that the student's research mentor will provide matching funds for internal funding. Applications may be made at any time during the year but at least four weeks prior to the meeting.
Applications and Deadline:
Forms and instructions are available at the OSR website. Applications should be returned to the OSR beginning March 1 of the Junior Year, but no later than September 1 of the senior year.
Review of Applications:
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The merit of the research project is judged on the basis of: a) clearly stated objectives; b) presentation of sound methodology; c) appropriate plans for data analysis; d) rationale and significance of the research; e) feasibility within the training period; and f) choice of mentor. The committee may request an interview with the student and/or research mentor. Applicants will receive a written notification of the committee's decision. Applications deemed unsuitable will be returned with suggestions for improvement.
Notification and Affirmation:
Applicants are notified within 30 days of submission of the outcome of the review process.
