Pediatric Sub-specialties - PEDI 540

Third year pediatrics clerkship

UMMS and affiliated outpatient clinical sites

Description and Goals:

The goal of this rotation is to introduce students to two subspecilty areas of pediatrics. This can be particularly useful for students who are considering a career in pediatrics and did not have time in subspecialty areas during their third year clerkship. Students will choose two of the following subspecialties: pulmonary/asthma, genetics, gastroenterology, endocrinology, nephrology, or neurology. They will spend time in outpatient clinics and/or on the inpatient wards depending on the specific subspecialties chosen. At the end of the rotation the student will be able to perform a history and physical exam focused on the reason for referral to the specialist, and describe the scope of practice in each of the subspecialties they experience. They will also understand the process of referral and the importance of the communication between specialist and primary care provider.
