Child Abuse and Neglect - PEDI 542

Pediatrics Clerkship

University of Maryland

Description and Goals:

This elective enables students to learn how child abuse and neglect are approached from both medical and interdisciplinary perspectives. A rich array of opportunities includes:

  • participating in the assessment of referred patients;
  • participating in team meetings;
  • visiting nearby community agencies where children suspected of having been abused are assessed;
  • visiting with public agencies (police, child protective services, states attorney);
  • individual discussions with our interdisciplinary faculty;
  • supervised reading;
  • access to self-learning materials;
  • participation in research meetings.

Beyond the important issue of child abuse and neglect, the student will be introduced to broader concerns regarding children's psychosocial environment and advocacy.
