Guidelines for Elective Applications

Visiting Student Electives - University of Maryland School of Medicine

Eligibility:

  • Only fourth-year students from LCME-accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical schools are eligible.
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing.
  • Successful completion of USMLE Step 1 is required.

Application Process:

  • All applications must be submitted through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) platform.
  • Each elective requires a separate application.
  • Applications and all supporting documents must be submitted at least 60 days prior to the elective start date.
  • All documentation must be submitted through VSLO at least 14 days prior to the start of the requested elective.
  • If a current visiting student wishes to apply for an additional elective, a new VSLO application is required.

Requirements:

  • Verification of good academic standing.
  • Proof of health and liability/malpractice insurance ($1,000,000/$3,000,000 minimum coverage).
  • Compliance with immunization requirements.
  • Completion of OSHA Universal Precautions training.

Rotation Details:

  • Electives are four weeks in duration, and completion of the full rotation is mandatory.
  • UMSOM does not accommodate off-block rotations.

Withdrawal/Cancellation:

  • Students may withdraw their application through VSLO up to two weeks before the elective start date.
  • For withdrawals less than two weeks prior to the start date, students must notify both the department coordinator and the OSA coordinator via email.

Evaluations:

  • Elective department coordinators will submit evaluations to the student's home institution.
