About the STAR-ORC

The Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research organized research center (STAR-ORC) is a world-class, multi-disciplinary research and educational center focusing on critical care and organ support, resuscitation, surgical outcomes, patient safety and injury prevention.

Originally established by Congress as the Charles “McC.” Mathias Jr. National Study Center for Trauma and Emergency Medical Systems, the STAR Center was designated as an organized research center at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) in 2007. It is the first research center in the nation dedicated exclusively to the study of trauma, its complications, and prevention.

The STAR-ORC serves as a research umbrella for the Department of Anesthesiology and the Program in Trauma. Many researchers working in the research center are doctors caring for trauma patients at the University of Maryland’s R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.
