ALERT: UNANTICIPATED PROBLEMS INVOLVING RISK TO RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS OR OTHERS
The UMB Human Research Protections Office (HRPO) has initiated an intensive education and outreach program to the UMB research community regarding Unanticipated Problems Involving Risk to Research Participants or Others. During the UMB HRPP AAHRPP re-accreditation site visit June 23-25, 2008, the AAHRPP site visitors reported a consistent lack of knowledge or familiarity with the terminology and the inability to distinguish between Unanticipated Problems and Adverse Events across all UMB personnel. UMB HRPP SOP I.3.J and III.2.B .
Due to the nature and implications of these events, all individuals involved with Human Subject Research are requested to participate in at least one educational offering by September 30, 2008 and to maintain your certificate of completion. Click here for more information.
NEW LOOK: The UMB HRPP and IRB Policy and Procedure Manual has been re-organized into a new format. Click here for more information and to access the manual.
The UMB Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) completed the re-accreditation site visit for the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protections Programs (AAHRPP) June 23, 24, & 25, 2008. The site visit included interviews with investigators, research personnel, IRB members, HRPO staff and UMB organizational leaders and HRPP representatives.
Overall, the site visit team was very impressed with the UMB Human Research Protections Program. We will receive a site visit report within 30 days and will submit our response 30 days after that, approximately August 25, 2008. It will be reviewed at the AAHRPP Council meeting in December 2008. We will notify you and other members of the UMB research community as soon as we learn the outcome.
The UMB HRPP is one of 104 research organizations that have earned this distinguished accreditation status. It is the commitment and effort of every member of the UMB research community to sustaining a culture of conscience that ensures the highest levels of protections and advocacy for research participants.
