History

The cancer center flow cytometry facility was established as a core in 1998 when Dr. Dean Mann became director. Dr. Mann is Professor of Pathology and Director of the Division of Immunogenetics and is recognized internationally for his work in this field. He was Co-Director of the first flow cytometry facility at the National Cancer Institute, NIH. In 1998, Dr. Mann, with the assistance of other cancer center members successfully applied for a grant through the shared resources for scientists outside NIC Cancer Center’s Program. This grant together with other outside financial support from the cancer center as well as a gift from Searle-Pharmacia provided funds to establish the current state-of-the-art flow cytometry facility.

Instrumentation

  • Two BD Instruments

  • One FACScan – upgraded in 1998 so that 3 color data may be acquired & analyzed

  • One FACSVantage – procured in 1998 in a basic format with a single laser; over the past 3 years this instrument has been upgraded by the addition of a second laser & a high speed cell sorting module

  • Two Macintosh Computers – use to support data acquisition & analysis with CellQuest Software as well as additional programs that allow cell cycle analysis

Administration Of The Resource

This facility is under the direction of Dean L. Mann, M.D. There is one full-time technician who conducts day-to-day acquisition & analysis. This technician has 13 years of flow cytometry experience. An additional half-time technician is being utilized on an as needed basis to conduct the complex flow cytometry sorting procedures.

Facility Utilization

Over the past year, 27 members of the Greenebaum Cancer Center Program with the University of Maryland Medical Systems utilized the flow cytometry facility in their basic & clinical studies. The total number of hours that the instruments were used for data acquisition and/or cell sorting was 1,030. The facility was used 61% of the time by the cancer center members and the remainder by other investigators in the University of Maryland Medical System. The demand for usage has increased steadily over the last year with upgraded instrumentation & analytic capabilities. There are a number of additional investigators both in the Cancer Center Program & throughout the institution at large that utilize this facility on an as needed basis.
