Keynote Speaker

Neal Baer will be the featured speaker for this year's convocation. Mr. Baer has numerous degrees - BA, Colorado College; EdM, Harvard Graduate School of Education; AM, Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences - and for the last seven years has been executive producer of NBC's Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU), which continues to rank among TV's top 10 dramas. He has won numerous awards for his writing and producing work on this show.

Prior to joining SVU, Dr. Baer was an executive producer on the NBC hit drama ER and was nominated for five Emmy Awards as a producer and two as a writer for that show. During that same time, he completed an internship and residency in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. Dr. Baer's latest endeavor is a project entitled "The House is Small But the Welcome is Big," a documentary that tells the stories of women and orphaned children living with HIV in Africa. (For more on Dr. Baer, click here.)

Regalia for SOM Faculty Members

All faculty and speakers participating in the Convocation ceremony are required to wear regalia.

Faculty members are permitted to wear their own personal Academic Doctoral regalia, if they so choose.

Faculty may also make arrangements to rent regalia for the School of Medicine Convocation. For pricing and/or

Rental orders must be received by April 26, 2010. Orders for regalia rentals may be dropped off at the bookstore, faxed to (410) 706-0069 or emailed to sm639@bncollege.com.

Transportation for SOM Faculty

Transportation will not be provided, as the hotel is walking distance from the School of Medicine. Please arrive no later than 10:15 a.m.

UMB Commencement

The commencement ceremony for the University of Maryland, Baltimore will take place on May 21, 2010 at 3 p.m. at the First Mariner Arena. The keynote speaker will be Congressman Elijah Cummings. See the UMB Commencement website for more information.
