Faculty Who Teach

A broad range of seminars are offered each semester for faculty interested in honing their teaching skills in large group, small group and clinic teaching settings. Workshops using distance education methods and formats will be employed as well, for faculty who prefer to teach and learn using those methods. See the AAMC's resource guide for faculty who teach. 

Faculty Who Perform Research

Investigators will be interested in the popular “Research Survival Skills” programs offered each semester, which include grant writing and lab management coursework. We also recommend that investigators take advantage of seminars planned annually on the topic of effective mentoring in order to make the best use of their mentor as a resource.

Faculty Leaders

For faculty who are residency program directors, course directors or other leaders of educational programs, upper level seminars in educational administration, educational scholarship, curriculum development and assessment are available. Workshops on planning an academic career, negotiating skills, executive-level peer mentoring and others are also offered on request. Women in Medicine

Women are well-represented in many ranks at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine, and comprise more than half of each medical student class. Women faculty nationally report facing unique challenges, particularly with regard to balancing academic goals and the demands of family life.

The Faculty Affairs & Professional Development hosts networking lunches periodically for women, and encourages new women faculty to take advantage of the teaching skills and research skills seminars offered, and to identify and work with an effective mentor. The Office will work with interested faculty to develop workshops, provide mentorship and serve as a clearinghouse for Women in Medicine information. For Minority Faculty in Medicine

The University of Maryland School of Medicine is fortunate to have an active, engaged and diverse faculty and student body. The School recognizes that faculty and students of color nationally report unique challenges in professional development, particularly in finding effective mentors and guides for junior faculty. The Office hosts periodic receptions with the Dean and seeks other opportunities to support the community of minority physicians.

The Office recommends that new minority faculty take advantage of the teaching skills and research skills seminars that are offered, as well as identify and work with an effective mentor. The Office will work with interested faculty to develop workshops or other programs and to serve as a resource for minority faculty. Find resources for minority faculty in medicine.
