Research Opportunities

Our current active research funding exceeds $115M, over half of which comes from NIH and other federal agencies. With nearly 100 funded investigators, the department has an extensive research base in both the basic and clinical sciences. The Department of Medicine also supports and conducts research internationally, with considerable infrastructure in such geographically diverse areas as South America and Africa.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine's Department of Medicine ranked third in the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) latest list of Research Expenditures per Faculty. The adverage expenditure among the 126 medical school in the nation was $80, 261, but our department's faculty had $275,677 in expenditures.

In the AAMC list of general Research Expenditures, the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Department of Medicine ranked 14th, with 51.9 million, compared to the average of 21.9 million.
