UM SOM: Mucosal Biology Research Center (MBRC)

Organization and administration. The MBRC is comprised of 33 University of Maryland faculty members, plus adjunct members in associated academic and biotechnology centers. Overall direction of the MBRC is the primary responsibility of its Director, Associate-Directors and Steering Committee members. These are:

Alessio Fasano, MD

MBRC Director, Director of the Center for Celiac Research, Professor of Pediatrics, Physiology, and Medicine

Dr. Fasano's research focuses on the control of barrier function in the gastrointestinal tract by a key regulatory protein known as zonulin.

Jeffrey Hasday, MD

MBRC Associate Director for Clinical & Translational Research, Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Professor of Medicine, Pathology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Dr. Hasday is an expert on mechanisms of lung injury and how fever regulates the immune response against bacterial infection.
