Trish

Trish Magyari, MS, CGC, has 27 years experience as a counselor, educator and researcher, and 33 years as a meditation practitioner. She welcomes individuals, couples and families to her practice and offers psychotherapy/counseling services as well as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Cognitive Therapy groups.  Trish believes that every one of us has rich inner resources that can be developed for achieving a sense of balance and wholeness in our lives, and for healing from the stresses and challenges of our lives.

Initially trained as a genetic counselor in 1981, Trish began studying mind-body techniques early in her career, and has over the years studied a variety of meditative practices, as well as yoga, guided imagery, authentic movement, chi gong, chanting and breath-work, among others. She began practicing Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in 1987, as developed at the University of Massachusetts by Jon Kabat-Zinn, and completed her training in 2000. Trish has been teaching Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at the Center for Integrative Medicine since 2003 and she states, "this is one of the most powerful tools I know of for adapting to--and enjoying--our life, just as it is".  In 2005 Trish entered a Master's Program in Clinical (Community) Counseling and is currently in her internship year here at the Center for Integrative Medicine, under the supervision of Margaret Chesney, PhD, a Clinical Psychologist and the Associate Director of the Center for Integrative Medicine.  During her career, Trish has been on the faculty of Georgetown University Medical Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, The National Institutes of Health, University of Maryland-Baltimore, and is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Genetic Counseling Training Program at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Individual, couple, and family psychotherapy/counseling is offered to enhance coping skills, resiliency, and wellbeing in the face of significant medical or life issues. Mindfulness - Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) are both 8-week mindfulness-skills groups designed to transform the relationship to stress, improve coping, and increase enjoyment of life.  Trish welcomes referrals for:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • chronic pain
  • stress-related illnesses
  • loss and grief
  • caregiver issues
  • decision-making
  • healing from traumatic events
  • life transitions

Trish builds on the inherent strengths of her clients and uses approaches from cognitive behavioral therapy, positive psychology, Gestalt therapy, behavioral medicine, and acceptance-based (mindfulness-based) psychotherapies. She also welcomes referrals from genetics professionals for families wishing to integrate and make personal meaning of genetic counseling information or concerns.
