School of Nursing
Description of Activities
The School of Nursing has a long history of involvement in international activities and has established productive partnerships with a variety of institutions in the US and abroad to collaborate in nursing education and research. Since 2004, Global Health has been part of the School of Nursing's Mission, Goals, Vision, and Strategic Plans and Initiatives. The goal is to establish a global health initiative in education, research, and practice; integrate and foster global health activities; promote international partnerships; and strengthen engagement with the University of Maryland, Baltimore community on global health issues.
In 2002, the School of Nursing was named the first WHO/PAHO Designated Center for Mental Health Nursing in the United States. The Center, currently under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, is one of two designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to focus on activities related to mental health nursing in the world. The Center focuses on education, training, and research projects that span interdisciplinary collaborations with institutions in South and Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. In addition, the Center is responsible for providing vision and leadership in advancing the School of Nursing's global health initiatives. Monthly meetings, cinema presentations, and the Annual Global Health Conference are offered to provide opportunities for inter-professional collaboration between students and faculty to participate in global health activities.
