The program mission of UM General Surgery stresses the provision of excellent service and care for patients and the superlative training of students and practicing surgeons. University of Maryland General Surgery is known as a leader in performing state-of-the-art minimally invasive procedures for a wide array of diseases. These include disorders of the endocrine system and gastrointestinal tract, hernia repair, bariatric surgery and much more.
Minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery, which our surgeons now use for most operations, requires much smaller incisions than traditional surgery. This makes operations safer and significantly reduces patients' hospital stays and recovery times.
University of Maryland General Surgery physicians performed many of the state's first laparoscopic procedures, including videoscopic cholecystectomy, pelvic lymph node dissection, vagotomy, hernia repair, colon resection, splenectomy and nephrectomy.
Our physicians' vast surgical expertise and use of minimally invasive techniques combined with the resources of the University of Maryland Medical Center distinguish us as a first-rate, comprehensive center of excellence.
