The University of Maryland Medical System

University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) is composed of the University of Maryland Medical Center, Kernan Hospital, University Specialty Hospital, Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital, Maryland General Hospital, and Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

The University of Maryland Medical Center, which at its founding in 1823 was known as the Baltimore Infirmary, is one of the oldest teaching hospitals in the U.S. All University of Maryland Medical Center doctors are faculty members at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the fifth oldest medical school in the country. The School of Medicine is a component of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, a campus that also includes the professional schools of Dentistry, Law, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, and the Graduate School, which offers 32 master's and doctoral degree programs in health, physical, biomedical, medical, and social sciences. The School of Medicine is also a strong research and educational institution, ranking among the leaders in terms of federal research funding and innovative, interdisciplinary investigative pursuits. The Association of American Medical Colleges ranks the School of Medicine 9th in total research funding in a field of 74 medical schools.

The University of Maryland Medical Center

UMMCThe University of Maryland Medical Center provides the broad range of innovative patient care services expected of a major tertiary care facility. The Medical Center, which cares for more than 30,000 inpatients and 200,000 outpatients every year, is known for its innovative care and research. The Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center is renowned for its strong interdisciplinary program that combines medical oncology, surgery, immunology, genetics, clinical pharmacology, and radiotherapy. The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center provides the highest level of trauma care, treating more that 7,000 critically ill and injured patients. The Shock Trauma Center is the designated statewide referral center for head and spinal injuries, multi-system trauma, and severe orthopaedic injuries.

Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center

VAThe Baltimore Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center was built on the campus of the University of Maryland Medical Center in 1994. Adjacent to the University of Maryland Hospital to which it is connected directly by a catwalk, this state-of-the-art facility serves as the tertiary care hub for the VA Maryland Health Care System. Approximately 1200 major cases are completed annually, including a complex case mix of gastrointestinal, vascular, thoracic, and oncologic surgery. Residents rotate at the VA during PGY-1, PGY-2 and chief levels. As an integrated institution for the general surgery residence, the Center's conferences are combined with UMMS.

Maryland General Hospital

Maryland GeneralFounded by physicians in 1881 as a university-affiliated teaching hospital, Maryland General Hospital (MGH) has grown into a 300-bed teaching institution that is the foundation for Maryland General Health Systems, Inc., a broad-spectrum network covering the continuum of care needs for more than 110,000 patients annually.

In 1999, MGH affiliated with the University of Maryland Medical System.

 

Baltimore Washington Medical Center

Baltimore Washington Medical CenterBaltimore Washington Medical Center, located between Baltimore and Annapolis in Glen Burnie, Maryland, has experienced continuous growth since opening as a hospital in 1965. The Baltimore Washington Medical System, including Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital, Special Beginnings Birth and Women's Center, and Sunrise Independent and Assisted Living of Severna Park, came to being in the 1990s to supply comprehensive community health services. In 2000 this 272-bed community hospital and acute care facility became part of the University of Maryland Medical System.

Mercy Medical Center

The Mercy Medical Center is an integrated component of the General Surgery Residency Training Program. Mercy Medical CenterLocated in downtown Baltimore, this 285-bed capacity institution is managed by the Sisters of Mercy. The commitment of the Mercy Medical Center to education dates from the early 1800's when a medical school was actually a part of the hospital. In a large measure through its major affiliation with the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Mercy Medical Center has maintained and expanded its educational commitment.

Residents in the general surgery program rotate to the Mercy Medical Center in the first, second, and fourth clinical years. Broad experience is provided in general and vascular surgery, urology, plastic surgery and other surgical specialties. A wide range of common surgical problems along with more complex surgical conditions are managed. Excellent support facilities are available. Close attending supervision is provided full-time Department members along with an active, interested clinical attending staff. Several core conferences are held at the Mercy Medical Center, includinga regular Grand Rounds along with journal club and teaching rounds.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital

Johns Hopkins HospitalThe Johns Hopkins Hospital has been equated with high quality healthcare since it opened its doors over a century ago. Its pediatric general surgery program currently offers a wide range of clinical expertise with surgical interventions including: advanced laparoscopy; thoracic, abdominal, vascular, airway, and oncologic surgery; specialized treatment of trauma and burns; transplantation of lung, kidney and liver (split liver, living related, cadaveric).
