Residency: Educational Policy
Attendance at the weekly morbidity and mortality conference (M&M), Grand Rounds, and the core curriculum conference is mandatory for all residents, including research residents, who are rotating at the University of Maryland Medical Center or the Baltimore Veterans Administration Hospital.
Residents rotating at Mercy Hospital are excused from these conferences but must attend the designated teaching conferences at that institution.
Residents working in research laboratories outside of Baltimore, Maryland are expected to attend like conferences at the institution in which they are affiliated.
Each resident is expected to display a level of professionalism at these conferences that includes appropriate preparation and attire.
All residents affiliated with the University of Maryland Department of Surgery are expected to take the American Board of Surgery in Training Examination, as this test best represents a composite score of overall resident performance throughout the year of training.
On a weekly basis, each resident must record his/her operative cases and procedures in the ACGME online database. On a monthly basis, the Program Director will review all resident case logs. Failure to complete the operative case log could result in a verbal or written reprimand or probation.
