Residency: Academic Day

Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conferences occur weekly on Thursday morning for review of complicated cases and discussion of interesting cases from the previous week, with an emphasis on identifying areas of improvement in patient care. Presentations are given in a non-punitive environment by the senior resident on the service (PGY-3 to fellow) to attendings, residents and medical students, with the goals being to learn from complications and errors, to modify behavior and judgment based on previous experiences, and to prevent repetition of errors leading to complications.

Grand Rounds follows M&M conference and consists of presentations on medical problems and particular disease treatments to an audience of attendings, residents and medical students.

Two one-hour blocks are set aside for didactic lectures, journal club and laparoscopic skills practice. The lectures are given by faculty members and are based on a series of topics to be covered in a two-year cycle. Quizzes are given for every lecture. Laparoscopic skills are practiced in the MASTRI Center under the supervision of the MIS faculty.
