Mission and Services
The
General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) is the cornerstone for clinical
research within the University of Maryland. Funded by the National Institutes
of Health (NIH) through a grant from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), the GCRC supports the full
spectrum of patient-oriented research.
The GCRC is available to all University of Maryland investigators who have a need for Center resources and who will conduct clinical research of scientific merit. NIH-funded research has top priority, but studies funded by foundations, industry and other sources are also welcome. The GCRC welcomes pilot studies that may lead to future peer-reviewed clinical research. Industry-initiated studies reimburse the GCRC for costs.
The GCRC can provide investigators with the resources they need to conduct clinical research, including nursing support for inpatient and outpatient data collection and patient care, DEXA Facility, Genomics, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics Cores and Bionutritional Services.
NCRR's GCRC program supports a national network of clinical research centers located at major U.S. academic medical centers. In 2006, NIH created a national consortium that will transform how clinical and translational research is conducted. This new consortium, funded through Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSAs), is comprised of 24 academic health centers located throughout the nation. The University of Maryland plans to submit an application to join the consortium in the fall of 2007.
