Project BRIDGES
Building Resources toward Independence, Decision-making, Graduation and Esteem of Self (BRIDGES) is a multi-component school- and community-based program located in Baltimore. It is directed by Dr. Beth Barnet and funded by the Office of Adolescent Pregnancy Programs of the Department of Health and Human Services. The program is designed to enhance and integrate comprehensive services for inner-city, childbearing adolescents and their children. Through linked and integrated school- and home-based interventions, this program targets multiple domains of functioning (health, life skills, educational attainment, parent-child interaction) to improve health outcomes among pregnant and parenting adolescents and their children.
Project BRIDGES is a collaborative effort between:
- University of Maryland School of Medicine's Department of Family & Community
- Medicine;
- The Paquin School, a public Baltimore City Senior High School for childbearing adolescents;
- The Family Tree, Inc., a non-profit community agency with a home-visiting and mentoring program designed to prevent child abuse and neglect;
- University of Maryland School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry, Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse;
- Praisercise, Inc., a postpartum program of fitness and exercise;
- The Cooperative Extension Services of Maryland, a group that provides a nutrition program for pregnant and parenting teens;
- Arena Players, the oldest continuously operating African-American theater company in the nation;
- The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics.
Project BRIDGES is multi-component and includes:
- A school-based life skills curriculum designed to enhance decision-making capabilities around issues related to substance abuse, sexually transmitted disease and HIV prevention;
- Well-Work, a fitness and exercise program for postpartum students that also teaches important aspects of nutrition for teens and their babies;
- Enhanced mental health through Ladies of S.O.U.L. (Supporting Ourselves & others through Unity and Love), a support group in which students explore issues related to family, home, school and community;
- A school- and community-based peer-led drama outreach program;
- A community-based longitudinal one-on-one home-visiting and mentoring program designed to provide the adolescent mother with support, enhance parenting skills and reduce child abuse and neglect.
The Baltimore Alliance
The Baltimore Alliance is a program of the University of Maryland School of Medicine designed to control and prevent hypertension and diabetes. It adopts a very unique approach, working with established outreach organizations to educate the community about the devastating impact of hypertension and diabetes. The Baltimore Alliance also places special emphasis on reaching out to the underserved and works along with other organizations to make healthcare accessible.
